03Repair or replace the air conditioner?

If a breaker has tripped and you are comfortable at the panel, Carrier advises trying one reset only; if it trips again or immediately, stop and call a professional.
Turn the system off and request service for smoke, a burning odor, buzzing with no startup, repeated breaker trips, loud grinding or banging, visible ice, or suspected refrigerant leakage. Do not open electrical compartments, test or discharge a capacitor, attach gauges, add refrigerant, or attempt compressor or coil work. EPA requires Section 608 certification for technicians performing work that can release refrigerant, and high-voltage components can remain dangerous after the system stops.
Smoke, burning odors, repeated breaker trips, suspected refrigerant leaks, and loud mechanical noise are stop-and-call conditions—not invitations to open the cabinet.
