HVAC repair or replace calculator

Pressure-test the decision, not just the repair bill

A cheap repair can be good value on the right system; a costly repair can still be right when replacement requires major redesign. Use this screen to identify which questions need evidence before you authorize either path.

Decision screen

Test the repair-versus-replace case

This screen weighs cost, age, reliability, comfort, and warranty. It cannot diagnose equipment or identify a safety defect.

Age matters, but coil condition, furnace condition, and refrigerant availability do too.

12 years

Range: new to 30 years old.

$1,800

Range: $200–$12,000. Include labor and required related parts.

Interpretation

What the decision signal does—and does not—say

The signal is a transparent screen, not a prediction of remaining life. It gives more weight to age, a repair that consumes a large share of a broad replacement benchmark, repeat failures, and ongoing performance problems.

It does not know whether the diagnosis is correct, whether a smaller repair is possible, or whether the proposed replacement fixes the root cause. Those questions require a qualified on-site evaluation.

  • Ask for the failed part, test result, and repair warranty in writing.
  • Check manufacturer and installer warranty coverage before paying.
  • For a large repair, get a second diagnosis—not only a second sales quote.
